Why do we as a society value money above many other more important aspects of life?

In other words, why do many people around the world focus all their time towards gaining paper which retains value only because we believe it to have any? I believe society can exist without the hindrance of currency and we can all work towards bettering the place in which we all reside on, earth. Does anyone else share my views on the world?
