Why do some Christians try to re-interpret the Bible to make it mesh with science?

Religion and Science should be seperated. I remember my history teacher told us last year how there were two other teachers at our school both of who I had, one was a strict atheist and believed if science didn't prove it, it wasn't true, and one who went strictly by the bible. He said you can't merge the two subjects, because it's faith against fact.
